The increased prevalence of xylazine in the illicit drug market demands urgent attention. Keystone Lab is proud to announce the expansion of our clinical urine test method to now include xylazine. This innovative testing solution aims to meet the growing demand for accurate and comprehensive analysis of xylazine. A major benefit to the development of the xylazine test method is presenting key insight to the provider and allowing a more defined treatment plan will better serve the patients and provide additional peace of mind as xylazine usage continues to rise.
Xylazine is a non-opioid sedative that is only authorized in the U.S. for veterinary use. It is most identified under the street names of “tranq” and “tranq dope”. While commonly found in combination with fentanyl, it has also been detected in mixtures containing cocaine, heroin, and other drugs.
The detection of xylazine in drug mixtures, particularly in combination with fentanyl, poses a severe threat across the United States. Despite being a non-opioid, xylazine can cause respiratory depression like that of an opioid overdose, increasing the risk of fatal outcomes. Naloxone, commonly used to counteract opioid effects, cannot reverse the symptoms of Xylazine intoxication, leaving victims in need of additional life-saving measures.
In a continued effort to combat the overdose epidemic, the presidential administration released a response plan to address the threat of xylazine mixed with fentanyl. This plan came into effect after the administration designated fentanyl combined with xylazine as an emerging threat to the U.S.

WCNC News Feature
“There are a few labs around the country that test for xylazine, also known as tranq. North Carolina is home to one lab at UNC-Chapel Hill. Now, a separate lab in Asheville is testing for the dangerous drug. Within days, Keystone Laboratories in Asheville told WCNC Charlotte it’s already had multiple positive cases from urine samples. On Wednesday, Kennedy Plude worked at her computer. She’s a scientist at Keystone Lab in Asheville. Every day her job is to figure out the blueprint and what sticks out from a sample. In July, aside from the over 70 drugs she screened for, the lab added another one. “We’ve had a couple that have come through and the doctors suspected xylazine and we got positives,” Plude said.”
WLOS News Feature
“Recently, the Biden Administration designated Fentanyl combined with Xylazine as an emerging threat in the United States. The DEA Laboratory System reported that in 2022 around 23% of Fentanyl powder and 7% of Fentanyl pills seized by the DEA contained Xylazine. Due to the designated threat, Keystone Lab accelerated its process to begin testing for the drug.”
WYFF 4 News Feature
“Keystone Laboratories in Asheville has been cognizant of just how dangerous xylazine has become nationwide. The alarming statistics and information about xylazine were the catalysts for the lab to begin developing a way to test for it.
As of this week, Keystone Labs became one of the very few labs across the nation to begin testing for xylazine. The drug testing facility is only the second lab in the state of North Carolina to do so, and the only one of the two with the capabilities to test for the drug through urine samples.
“Knowing that the White House and the Biden administration labeled it as an emerging threat, that really gave us a sense of urgency,” Keystone Labs sales and marketing manager David Price said. “Xylazine testing went live on Monday, July 10.”
